Nestled in the heart of Oakland, Shan Dong offers a vibrant journey through authentic Chinese and Asian flavors that beautifully showcase regional specialties. This inviting restaurant is a haven for noodle lovers and fans of bold, balanced spices. Known for its bustling, intimate dining space, Shan Dong delivers an exceptional culinary experience where each dish bursts with rich textures and fresh ingredients.
The menu reads like a love letter to classic Chinese comfort food, featuring standout dishes such as the velvety Hunan Velvet Chicken and the satisfyingly tangy Sweet & Sour Shrimp (甜酸蝦球). The House Special Pancake Stuffed with Leeks (韭菜盒子) is a crispy, savory delight that pairs perfectly with the soul-warming Hot and Sour Soup. Expect handmade craftsmanship in plates like Hand-Rolled Noodles, Dan Dan Noodles, and the subtly nutty Sesame Paste Noodles (麻醬麵), which can be enriched with your choice of beef, pork, chicken, or shrimp for an extra touch of indulgence.
Meat lovers will find themselves drawn to the complex flavors of the Mongolian Beef, the tender and richly spiced Shan Dong Beef, and a variety of lamb dishes that range from the pepper-kissed Black Pepper Lamb to the fiery Spicy Jalapeño Lamb. Pork options bring a spicy punch with dishes like Hunan Twice Cooked Pork (回鍋肉) and the delicately fragrant Shredded Pork with Dried Bean Curd (香乾肉絲). Vegetable side dishes, such as the famously crispy and perfectly seasoned Dry Braised Green Beans and Bok Choy, offer fresh balance and texture to your meal.
What truly sets Shan Dong apart is the evident care in the preparation of their noodles—each strand feels freshly crafted, tender yet resilient, creating a deeply satisfying mouthfeel. Diners consistently praise the handmade quality, with many returning for the irresistible Hand-Cut Noodles and Seafood Chow Mein. The Garlic Eggplant, as shared by a devoted patron, carries a perfect blend of smoky garlic and tender vegetable sweetness, truly a must-try.
The atmosphere is warm and bustling, often filled with the aroma of spices and the joyful hum of satisfied diners. Due to its cozy size and growing popularity, especially among locals who swear by its culinary treasures, small waits are common—a testament to the restaurant’s undeniable charm and quality. As one visitor from Tennessee so aptly put it, “If I could pack Shan Dong in my suitcase, I would.” It’s a place where fast, friendly service meets deeply comforting food that feels like a true celebration of Chinese culinary art.
Whether you crave the crispy salt and pepper prawns or want to savor a rich bowl of ZhaCai Noodles Soup with Shredded Pork & Vegetables, Shan Dong invites you to dive into a meal that is at once both familiar and wonderfully authentic. For those willing to explore the rich tapestry of flavors offered here, each bite is a discovery, making every visit an unforgettable treat.

Popular Chinese restaurant known for their regional cuisine. The food is flavorful with plenty of good options and dumplings. They have affordable prices and the food is brought out quickly. They have a small dining space so at times, you may need to wait to enter.
Excellent green beans. Delicious, crunchy salt & paper prawns. Shan Dong beef very good too. Prok chow mein good but noodles were a little too salty for me.
Had amazing hand pulled noodles with seafood and also got an order of green beans. Definitely recommend!
I must have accidentally deleted my images, but I loved my experience here. The noodles felt home-made, and the garlic eggplant is the best. Highly recommended, but was crowded when we arrived without a reservation, so plan ahead accordingly!
I'm lucky to have a really good friend in Oakland, and on top of that, they live close to Shan Dong. Everytime we visit, it's a guarantee that we'll eat here. If I could pack Shan Dong in my suitcase and take it back to Tennessee, I would. Stop reading the comments and just go there. If there's a wait, it's more than worth it. What a treat this place is!
Just scroll a little bit if you want to hear more about how exceptional their Chinese Food is. I have to at least say it's the best I've ever had. But for me what was most impressive is how despite having an absolutely massive menu, a menu so massive Gordon would yell at it. Shan Dong's team consistently serves insanely delicious and certainly fresh food in under 15 minutes, regardless of how busy they are. I was lucky enough to get seated near the kitchen for my latest visit. They didn't have a line out the door this time, but they certainly had a small army of Doordash drivers out front waiting for delicious eats to deliver. Expo was a heavily used end table and rope for paper tickets, but their team managed to send piles of sinfully delicious food out in record time. The fact they're making handmade noodles on top of running a perfect service in that environment, totally mind boggling. Like if you're leaving anything other than five stars, you ordered the one dish they can't get right. Have yet to figure out which one that is.
Food is generally very good here. The hands made noodles are the best if you can get it. We ordered the sesame paste hand stretched noodles and they were delicious and flavorful. We also ordered the pork chow main. It was good but this time I found that it was a bit salty. I've been visiting this place for years and I'm bummed that they got rid of the Shan Dong steamed meat and vegetables buns. They were so good! Wish they brought it back.
We visited at noon on a Saturday and did not have a wait. Once seated, we were provided with hot tea, which was nice. We made our order, and it quickly arrived within about 5 minutes. We ordered the Shan Dong Chicken, the sesame noodles with the handmade noodles, and the special dumplings. The Shan Dong chicken is so good! You must try that when visiting here. Next time, we want to try the hot and spicy noodles, the sesame noodles wasn’t our favorite but was still decent. From reviews online it looks like that is the most popular noodle dish. The special dumplings are good, I like the filling. But, keep in mind it can be a lot of dough when pairing the special dumplings with the handmade noodles. Overall, we love stopping here whenever we are passing through Oakland.
